On June 11th 1963, Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, sat down in the middle of a busy intersection in Saigon, covered himself in gasoline and He then ignited a match, and set himself on fire. Đức burned to death in a matter of minutes, and he was immortalized in a famous photograph taken by a reporter who was in Vietnam in order to photograph the war. All those who saw this spectacle were taken by the fact that Duc did not make a sound while burning to death. Đức was protesting President Ngô Đình Diệm’s administration for oppressing the Buddhist religion.

I see all these pictures, and read things about all the amazing, beautiful things all around the world. These brilliant cultures and people. And then I look around where I am. Everything is just…existent. Everything is based around this so called “American Dream” that has obviously failed, the people here are like zombies. Working 9-5, then coming home to their Wife and kids, eating food simply to keep themselves alive, sleeping for 8 hours and then going back to their job, repeating that cycle Monday-Friday. Then on saturday they clean the house and mow the lawn. And sunday they have church, and prepare for the week long cycle. This “American Dream” is not for me. Study hard in classes you hate at school, so you can get a job you hate, to make a living so you can buy food to prolong your life so you can continue to do the job you hate for a longer period of time.

But it doesn’t matter how hard you work. You’ll never be able to get ahead with this country the way it is.

I have this unsatisfiable taste for adventure, and every time I see photographs of some far away place, I die a little inside. I can’t stand it here.

The closest thing I’ve found to adventure and leading a validated, enjoyable existence here is the Occupy movement, where at least I feel like I’m doing something worth doing.

I’m so tired of everyone trying to tell me I need to study hard in school and get a good job, even if I hate it. Just to make a good living and support a family, because “that’s what life is”

FUCK that. Life isn’t meant to be something you just trudge through, your life is what you fucking make it. You should be able to look back and not have any regrets, you should get exactly what you want out of each moment. Not what is expected of you. I don’t care about money. I don’t care about possessions. None of that shit matters. It’s not going to make you happy, ever. No matter how hard you try. It’s just going to create this empty void inside you , and you may be content for a little while, but that’s the extent of it. As that void keeps growing it’s going to fucking swallow you up.

I feel like I’m losing my mind. Like I’m trapped, and I can’t breathe. I’m so tired of trying to live up to expectations.

Somebody please just get me out of here and let me fucking live.
